4x4 Sticking Tracks
2005
Saturday - Sunday
Sticking 4x4 tracks is a continuous task. Sticks fall down or break and new ones have to be put in place. A track with sticks on makes it safer - especially for winter conditions when snow is covering the ground.
The plan for the weekend is to stick close to the 4x4 club's hut at Setur.
Weather is a bit wet and cloudy with occasional showers but the temperature is not too low.
We drive the shortest route to Setur - past Kerlingarfjöll where the waterfall Gýgjarfoss is on our way...
...and cross the river close by.
Autumn colors at Kerlingarfjöll - where there are some huts for weary travelers. This is as far as the road goes and where the track to Setur starts.
Taking a small lunch break and coordinating the work ahead.
Two small trailers carry the sticks.
Dagur Bragason - my co-driver for the trip - is making a new hole for this stick.
We resurrect fallen sticks and put in new ones where needed.
Einar is a co-driver for Valdimar on the Isuzu Trooper. Einar broke the front drive on his Cherokee - so he can't use it now.
"Uncle" Gunni has this old 1984 Toyota Hilux.
Kalli allows his 12 year old son to take the wheel for a few kilometers!
After the sticks are in the ground they have to be marked with light reflecting ribbons to make them more visible in the dark.
Gunnar Hrodmarsson has just upgraded his Patrol with 38 inch tires. His sons hang on between sticks.
Maggi is with Olgeir on the Daihatsu Rocky. He is the last in lane and painting the sticks for added visibility.
As the day passes by clouds get thinner and the sun breaks through. Much of this area is really a desert with hardly any vegetation.
Evening at Setur starts with lighting the grill and then later using it for cooking lamb steak and potatoes.
Sitting down to eat after the hard work of the day is just great. The steak is just right...
