The Toyota 4Runner is quite popular among offroaders and has been since its introduction in 1984. The first 4Runner was a small SUV clearly just a Toyota Hilux pickup with a fiberglass shell to cover the bed. Through the years it has developed to be a decent size SUV with usable offroad capability.
Like many of the 4x4 Toyota's the the 4Runner is durable on and off the road.
Currently based on the FJ Cruiser platform with a solid rear axle, powerful 4.0 liter 270 hp engine and 278 pound-feet of torque it should serve nicely for most. Adding the "Trail" trim-package with the electric locking rear differential makes it pretty usable off the factory floor.
In some markets the 4Runner is known as: Toyota HiLux Surf.
The first generation Toyota 4Runner was little more than a HiLux pickup in a disguise. The older models where a considered too narrow and too low in horsepower. Still used by many offroaders as they were low cost and easy to lift and modify.
One of the bigger acchievements for the 4Runner has to be running a stock Toyota 4Runner through the 2009 Baja 1000. Using all stock hardware, just adding the security stuff, like roll cage and lights.
Jon G. Snaeland is one of the most active 4 wheelers in Iceland. He is in the board of the Icelandic 4x4 club and owns this "slightly" modified Toyota 4 Runner. The 4Runner is fully equipped to handle the most demanding terrain and is supported by a set of 44 inch Dick Cepec tires.
1988 Toyota 4Runner Devon from Canda likes all kinds of wheelin' any chance he gets - from the mud hole on the side of the road to the mud flats up at Stave Lake and every rugged mountain road that southern B.C. has to offer.

Extreme 4x4 are highly modified and custom built 4x4s. Some of them may look like other 4x4s but as you look closer you see interesting solutions. Others are obviously extreme 4x4s!
