Formula Off Road
Icelandic Championship
Egilsstadir June 23. 2007
The second Formula Off Road Icelandic Championship is at Egilsstadir in the north-east part of Iceland. This is about as far from Reykjavik as you can go. Equally far going the north and the south route.
The trucks and contenders have to be ready at 9:00 in the morning. The trucks are transported using various means. Most are sitting on full size trucks like the Timaur...
...this local guy hauled his truck using a farm tractor and a trailer with bags of hay still around 🙂
Most come in with smaller tires so they fit inside a standard truck box. Sverrir is starting to jack up the N1 Willys to get the competition tires on.
It is dry and windy and cold and they are fighting the dust with all means - like this dust preventer with a 2500 gallons water tank spraying the area.
The tracks are really hard this time and it shows!
Guðlaugur S. Helgason on Magic Yellow shows much improvements from the last competition.
In the timed track he is able to shorten his time by making this jump securing him the fourth place.
Einar Gunnlaugsson on Greifinn.
Einar rolling his truck in one of the steep slopes.
He is still able to finish all courses.
Gunnar Gunnarsson on the Clown.
Gunnar shows some amazing stunts in his driving. In this case it looks like he is completely helpless and almost rolled over.
By backing and flooring the rig he gets back on track. Gunnar is the only one to finish ANY of the first 6 tracks and secures his first place in the competition.
Ragnar Róbertsson on his N1 Willys.
Ragnar wins the modified street class and is fourth overall.
Vignir R. Vignisson is competing on Ragnar's N1 Willys. Being a member in Ragnar's team he is not supposed to ruin his truck and must drive with ease. In the last track he can show a little bit more and finishes 2 seconds faster than Ragnar.
Eyjólfur Skúlason on the Leopard.
Kristmundur Dagsson on Timaur.
Kristmundur rolls his truck backover and ends up loosing one tire. What is worse is that the air filter breaks of and he gets sand in the engine and has to quit for the day.
Leó Viðar Björnsson on the Ironmaiden.
Leó ends up in fifth place.
The working conditions can be pretty hard in the middle of all this dust, dirt and sand - not to mention the visibility!
Ólafur B. Jónsson on the Fox.
Ólafur shows that getting second place in the last round was no luck. He also finishes in second place today.
Bjarki Reynisson on the Animal.
Bjarki rolls his truck hard in this track and even though it looks bad he can continue the competition...
...and making the jump in the timed course gives him the second place in the modified street class and seventh overall.
Sigurður Þ. Jónsson on the Troll.
This doesn't look too bad...
...but suddenly the Troll is upside down and heading down hill. Sigurður ends up in third place.
Daniel G. Ingimundarson on the Green Thunder.
Sigurjón Leifsson is a newcomer in the sport.
The street legal class is gradually getting more interesting. They have to have legal registration and number plates and use street legal tires. In addition they must have a roll cage.
Hlynur B. Sigurðsson on the Toyota Hilux starts in the first track. The engine is the original 6 cylinder and his power is obviously lacking compared to the Jeeps.
Páll Pálsson on the '66 Willys has more power and knows how to use it. His main competitor is not around and he takes the first place with relative ease.
In the timed course the street legal class drive the same route as the other contenders. They are not able to float on the water and Hannes B. Þórarinsson who is driving the other Willys gets it wet and stalls the engine.
Pétur Viðarsson has just got this '75 Range Rover ready for the competition and shows it no mercy.
Like in this jump...
... where the landing is right on the nose - he still drives on with full throttle and gets a great cheering from the audience.
Since the front wheels are a bit further back than on the Willys he has problems on other tracks and finishes in last place.
Gunnar Gunnarsson winner in the unlimited class.
Ragnar Róbertsson winner in the modified street class.
Páll Pálsson winner in the street legal class.
