Formula Off Road
Icelandic Championship
Akureyri May 27. 2007
Like last year the first Formula Off Road competition is in Akureyri. Past days have been cold but just today summer has finally arrived.
The event starts at 13:00 and I am a little late after driving all the way from Reykjavik in the morning.
Gunnar Gunnarsson in his Clown starts the first track with a roll.
After some great and confident driving he manages to get the first price in the unlimited class as well as overall.
Ragnar Robertsson the last years winner of the overall.
Ragnar drives well enough to get the first price in modified street class.
Ragnar feels he is not having a good day though. If you look closely at this picture you can see leakage from underneath the Willys.
Ragnar ends up in 6th place in the overall competition.
An old timer, Einar Gunnlaugsson on Greifinn. He drives pretty well and ends up in fourth place.
Leó Viðar Björnsson...
...also takes a light roll.
Daniel G. Ingimundarson on the Green Thunder.
Daniel has shown much improvement from last year and the result is also considerably better.
He finishes fifth.
Sigurður Þór Jónsson on the Troll.
Sigurður begins well and is competing for the first place with Gunnar but his performance in the last couple of tracks is not adequate for more than the third place.
Guðlaugur S. Helgason on Magic Yellow.
Guðlaugur starts ok but has a breakdown and is unable to continue.
Ólafur Bragi Jónsson on the Fox.
Ólafur shows all of his best sides and gets the second place overall.
Erlingur R. Klemenzson on the Raven.
The Raven shows no fear...
...but this doesn't look good and...
ends with an impressive series of rolls down the whole slope.
Lucky for him the roll cage stands the pressure and he jumps on the roof to signal his well being.
The Willys is however badly damaged and is missing a rear axle along with the attached wheel. This is the last track the truck today.
Kristmundur Dagsson on TimAurinn.
Kristmundur ends up in ninth place.
Karl V Jónsson on his Frosty.
Bjarki Reynisson in the Animal has been working on the front suspension and changed it into a four link system. He says it works much better. Bjarki gets second place in the modified street class.
The trucks of the street legal class drive slightly easier tracks. Compared to last year the competition is also more interesting to watch.
Páll Pálsson on his Willys CJ 5 - 1966.
Hlynur B. Sigurðsson on this good looking and recently rebuilt Toyota Hilux shows that he can drive although he lacks another two cylinders to match the Chevy 350s in the two blue Jeeps.
Steingrímur Bjarnaon on the Jeep CJ 5 - 1964 is competing hard with Páll. In the end there are only 10 points that separate the two.
The Troll resting after the day.
The Raven definitely needs some taking care of after all the beating.
Gunnar Gunnarsson winner in unlimited class
Ragnar Róbertsson winner in modified street class.
Páll Pálsson winner in street legal class.
