Formula Off Road
World Cup
Skien Norway
September 17. 2006
The second day of competition in Norway is the sixth and final round in the World Cup. It also serves as the final Nordic Countries Cup and the Norwegian Cup.
After seeing all the dangerous rollovers yesterday it is decided to lower the risk by making the harder parts of the tracks lower in the slopes.
As it turns out there are no fewer rolls - only less damaging.
This sweet F-150 is owned by Bubbi, and Icelander living in Norway. He took me and Ragnar for a short ride. It is not a 4x4 but we were impressed anyway. With 380 hp and heaps of torque it is a mean street machine! Bubbi is leading the track design and competition for the weekend.
Another beautiful rig - a fully restored Willys Overland.
The onlookers are lining up at the other side of the rock mine.
As before the Unlimited Class and Modified Street Class are run separately starting with the Unlimited Class. The same tracks are then driven by the Modified Street Class.
Tuukka Laasonen from Finland starts in the first track. His valiant efforts don't give him more than 180 points.
Having a roll in second track...
...and then a fire in the third. There will be no more racing for the Black Moose.
Most drivers will settle for painting flames of fire on their vehicles. Tuukka doesn't settle for that! This is all "natural" hot flaming fire!
Leo Vidar Bjornsson from Iceland.
The Iron Maiden is not in its best form today and ends up in 10th place.
Ole Kristian Rustan from Norway.
After this back flop in third track and another in fourth his hopes are lost.
Icelandic Olafur B. Jonsson on the Fox.
Olafur is able to continue racing after this rollover in the fourth track.
The Fox is doing slightly better than yesterday and ends up 6th.
Per Anders Nordstedt from Norway.
Ulf Drakenheim from Sweden seems to be doing well in the first track.
Seconds later...
...it is obvious that this is not his day. Rolling down the slope is more than his truck can take.
Miikka Kaskinen from Finland does well in the first track but seems to loose his touch in the later ones...
...perhaps because of this roll in the third track.
Daniel G. Ingimundarson from Iceland.
Gisli G. Jonsson from Iceland continues to drive with unbelievable style and a complete lack of fear. He seems to find grip where nobody else does.
4x4 OffRoads!
After this short flying lesson which ends in a roll he is still able to continue and gets 10 more points than the next competitor. Gisli receives the well deserved gold medal price.
Arne Johannesen from Norway.
The short wheelbase of his truck seems to cause a higher risk of rollover.
Morten Løvskogen from Norway drives much better than yesterday. He ends in fifth place.
Roar Johansen from Norway is also doing much better.
Having similar problems with rollovers as Arne - his fellow Torshov team member - he is still improving in each track and finally competing for the top position and gets the bronze price.
Gunnar Gunnarsson from Iceland.
Good driving for the most tracks. In the third and fifth track he looses important points and ends up in fourth place.
Finn Erik Løberg from Norway. He won the Modified Street Class World Cup last time it was held. This is his first year driving an Unlimited Class vehicle. His driving is really impressive and staying close to Gisli in all tracks secures his silver price.
Sigurdur Thor Jonsson from Iceland.
Sigurdur also has his share of rollovers.
Fredrik Sipuri from Norway.
Cars in the Modified Street Class drive the same route as the Unlimited after they have finished.
Sofia Scholin-Borg from Sweden showed us yesterday that she can really drive as good as the boys. Even though her truck is not as powerful as many others and not even sporting a nitro system she shows her talent. Today she drives to win the gold medal price!
Kjetil Håkonsen from Norway.
Bjarki Reynisson from Iceland.
Jare Salonen from Finland drives well and ends up in fourth place.
Geir Haug from Norway.
Christian Austad from Norway. Even though he seriously damaged his truck yesterday in the big roll he worked all day and into the night in welding the frame and fixing the bent suspension parts to get into the race today. This is something he must have learned from the Icelanders!
Even rolling the truck AGAIN today doesn't stop him. Great attitude and perseverance lands him in fifth place - only a little bit more than 100 points from first place.
Ragnar Robertsson from Iceland. He doesn't have to win today to receive the World Cup but it would be a bonus.
Ragnar rolls the truck in fourth track with little damage. This is his first roll since 2002!
In the sixth and last track - the time track - Ragnar drives like crazy with the aim of going from fourth to first place. His time of 37.0 seconds is by far the best time of the day - even counting the Unlimited Class. Nobody else is under 40 seconds! The score is enough to lift Ragnar in second place - 54 points from Sofia Scholin-Borg.
Anssi Oivanen from Finland is also competing hard for victory.
After his share of rolls he ends in third place getting the bronze price.
Erik Selbekk and Roger Hovdal from Norway both drive the same truck just like yesterday.
