Formula Off Road
Icelandic Championship
and World Cup
Hella July 15. 2006
The second day of the Formula Off Road World Cup is also the third Icelandic Championship.
A few more competitors have registered for the day in addition to most of guys from yesterday. There will be 8 tracks to compete in today.
If the weather was bad yesterday it is twice as bad today.
Due to serious mistreatment the day before many contestants have to do some damage repair. 4x4s with broken axles, transmissions or other mechanical failures have to be fixed before the race.
Gunnar Egilsson is here with two 6x6 Ford Econolines. (One and the same who made the World Record Trip to The South Pole)
These two German couples brought their Jeeps with them and have been touring Iceland. The Jeep is fairly rare in Germany but these have been used in competitions and are quite capable with the modifications.
Ragnar Robertsson in Pizza 67 Willys starts the first track and is does pretty well in the first 6 tracks but blows the carburetor at the start of the 7th track (see the video below). Still he finishes 4th in the Overall and 1st in the Modified Street Class.
Eyjolfur Skulason in the Leopard. He didn't compete yesterday but is displaying good maneuvers.
Siggi in the Troll does pretty well. He is competing for the first place throughout the race.
Gisli G. Jonsen shows no fear and takes his Steroid flying again and again. He is hard to beat in this mood.
Gunnar Gunnarsson takes the Clown to the extreme. He does well for the first tracks and is among the best.
Miikka Kaskinen in Big-Willys didn't drive as well as yesterday. He rolls the truck over a few times just like he is doing here after some aerobatics.
Arne Johannesen in Lightfoot is right up among the best players today. He is finishing most tracks with quality driving mixed with heaps of horse under the hood.
Siggi in the Troll.
4x4 Off Roads!
Karl Vidir Jonsson on Frosty. He is doing the sport mostly for fun and this short flight tour has to contribute a lot to that!
Gunnar Asgeirsson in The Goodyear Eagle. He takes almost a full house of points in the first three tracks but unfortunately he has to quit due to some mechanical breakdown.
Per Anders Nordstadt in T-Rex.
Gunnar in The Clown.
Kjetil Håkonsen in Sandy catches second place again in the Modified Street Class.
Daniel in the Green Thunder continues to roll his truck but is still among the top drivers.
Ole Kristian Rustan in Adrenalin is close to the top and finishes 4th in the Unlimited Class.
Gisli G. Jonsen in The Steroid.
Roar Johansen in the Thunderbolt.
Sturla in Batman.
Gunnar in The Clown.
Gunnar Egilsson in his Ice Cool. This is not for anybody who is afraid of heights!
Ragnar Robertsson in Pizza 67 Willys.
Arne Johannesen in Lightfoot drives well and gets the bronze price.
Arne Johannesen in Lightfoot. This was the most spectacular fly/roll over stunt for the day.
Morten Lovskogen in Gladiator.
The 7th track includes first driving over a river and then again driving downstream for maybe 200 meters (700 feet). Here is Morten Lovskogen again in Gladiator.
Most drivers stall their engines at some point in the river and sink but Gisli on the Steroid crosses the river with truly artful driving.
The muddy swamp is traditionally the last track. It is a timed event and the drivers have to take on the S-shaped course with full force and lots of luck.
Anssi Oivanen in Linda deep in the swamp. He is one of only 6 drivers to make it the whole track.
To get the trucks unstuck from the swamp is best done by this swamp-dragon. Here is Gunnar IceCool stuck up to his neck in the mud and the engine is stalled.
Olafur Bragi Jonsson on the Fox
Finn Erik Loberg in RaceRunner
Gunnar Mar Gudmundsson.
Magnus Bergsson in Willys '48.
Leo Vidar Bjornsson in IronMaiden.
Kristmundur Dagsson in Timaur.
Gudlaugur S. Helgason in Magic Yellow.
Street Legal Class was first driven in Mosfellsbaer. This time it is slightly more interesting to watch.
Asgeir Jamil Allansson in Toyota Land Cruiser 1994. This unmodified Cruiser is able to perform stunning tricks.
Pall Palsson in Willys CJ5 1966 gets second place.
David Freyr Jonsson in Jeep Cherokee 1988. The Cherokee is modified in a typical way for Icelandic style snow driving with the family.
Hrolfur Arni Borgarsson in Jeep CJ2 '46 gets the bronze.
Steingrimur Bjarnason in his Willys Jeep is the winner in the Street Legal Class.
Track in Street Legal Class are laid out to be easier and not to risky for rollovers. They still had to cross the river on a timed basis and most needed help after getting their engines wet.

All in all a great off-roading weekend!
Formula Off Road - Off Road motor sport at its best. Most powerful specially modified 4x4 vehicles taken to the extreme with full throttle and nitro. Hundreds upon hundreds of horses under the hood.
