4x4 Tindfjallajokull
Finally a great opportunity to go off roading. Weather forecast looks promising with the wind coming from north. Going out to taste some snow and fresh air!
Early sunrise through the fog at our stop in Hella.
Einar has just become a radio amateur and is testing some equipment with the help of his co-driver. The big yellow antenna is a homemade for SSB radio.
As we head north and into the highlands we take a short stop to soften the tires a little bit.
Soon - the weather gets better with the clear sky coming through and only some occasional foggy spots.
Oli and co-driver in his Toyota Double Cab has recently swapped his axles for newer and slightly wider Toyota axles. His rear axle has been moved back some 27 cm (11 inches) and is supported by air bag suspension.
Skuli and his wife Margret take their kids along in the Land Rover Defender.
Bessi and his co-driver in the Toyota Double Cab...
...and me in my Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
The snow is mostly rock hard and slippery like ice but with soft patches between.
Bessi has a winch up front...
...it may come in handy if we get into serious trouble.
We are heading towards the peaky-glacier Tindfjallajokull.
Skuli allows the kids to be pulled along on sleds and snowboards.
Skuli turns into a kid again - and also has a go on the sled.
Fun Fun Fun!
The fog comes and goes. Here are the peaks close by - but barely visible...
4x4 Off Roads!
...next moment they are as clear as they can be.
At 1.100 meters (3700 feet) the view is magnificent. We can see the whole south part of Iceland from the coast to far away mountains and ice caps.
Einar in the well connected Cherokee.
A few daring people in the group take a hike up this small icy peak and get the best view and some good exercise.
I installed a camera bracket on the dashboard and fitted my camcorder there for the trip. I plan on making a short video of the trip. That would give you a slightly better feeling and another angle on the trip.
Before we get on the highway again it is necessary to pump air back into the tires. The red Fini pump works fast in filling up the tires.
Sunset over mt. Thrihyrningur.
This has been a fantastic use of this beautiful day up in the highlands. From sunrise to sunset.
Thanks to all!
